Meeting #18 – Growing Blueberries and Figs – 3/14/16

PRESENTER: Bonnie Jo Chastain

Bonnie Jo Chastain, a Master Gardener Extension Volunteer presented about “Growing Figs and Blueberries”. Originally from Davenport, Iowa, she has lived in Athens for 45 years.  She took the Master Gardener Class in 2013. Most of her volunteer hours are devoted to giving presentations to garden clubs and other organizations along with participating in the Garden Workshop series given at the Athens-Clarke County Library.

ROCKET STOVE

The begin the meeting, Don gave a demonstration on unique ways to start a fire, including  a “rocket stove” and a “Swedish Torch”. Both setups required everyday,  common materials and can be assembled in minutes. See Don’s fire demo by watching the YouTube video above…

SOLAR COOKING

Dorothy Shumans presented about her experience working in Haiti, using solar cookers as a missionary tool. Dorothy even brought two dishes to share that she had solar cooked earlier that day and they were delicious! Dorothy explained how practical sun ovens can be, especially in emergencies, power outages, or remote locations without access to power.

Dorothy also presented on two other items: a “UV PAQ” and a Cloudy Day Cube Stove.”

Raffle prizes, including books and garden ornaments were awarded at the end of the meeting.

Curtis Yaun presented on growing Muscadines grapes and how to process them, in addition to other fruits, into wine, using simple home products. He shared with us his personal, tried methods, tools, and tactics to grow Muscadine grapes and make exceptional wine. Curtis also shared samples of a variety of his wines with the group.
